Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

My attempt at a 14 team schedule.

Since there has been lots of talks about how the scheduling would be affected if the SEC went to 14 teams, I decided to give my attempt at it.  I assumed the schedule would stay at 8 conference games with one permanent cross divisional rival.  Here's what I came up with.  I believe most of the major rivalries stay on a yearly basis, and the divisions are distributed pretty evenly.

Star-divide

First I changed the divisions, but instead of trying to keep them east/west, I decided a more northish/southish route was better.  I then made three scenarios depending on who the 14th team would be.  First I did it assuming we would get another big12 team (OU, Mizzou, etc.)  One of them would go in the south the other in the north, and they would become rivals.

North  Division in bold, South Division in Italics

Alabama, Auburn

Arkansas, LSU

South Carolina, Georgia

Kentucky, Miss State

Tennessee, Florida

Vanderbilt, Ole Miss

Big 12, Texas A&M

Then I made one assuming another team would join in the north (VT, or such). Being a razorback fan, I changed the rivalries a little, considering how there's tradition between Arkansas and A&M it made it a more natural choice.

Alabama, Auburn

Arkansas, Texas A&M

South Carolina, Georgia

Kentucky, Miss State

Tennessee, Florida

Vanderbilt, Ole Miss

*North, LSU

And lastly I made one for adding a new team in the south division (FSU), where I made Auburn part of the north.  I think that makes it the most fair and less conficting of any other choice, even if they're not really northern...

Alabama, Miss St

Arkansas, Texas A&M

South Carolina, South*

Kentucky, LSU

Tennessee, Florida

Vanderbilt, Ole Miss

Auburn, Georgia

That first one actually looks really good, except that Arkansas doesn't pick up A&M

I guess if you’re okay with that, it’s okay. Second one, of course, fixes that.

Third one loses Georgia/Carolina, which won’t make the ’Cocks too happy.

Either way though, you gotta change the names. There can be no “SEC North.”

SEC BrownLiquor vs SEC Margaritaville?

Given how lopsided the divisions have been in the revenue sports lately, I think breaking up the current East-West model is actually the best Idea I’ve heard in a while. Although BrownLiquor is still a little top-heavy in men’s hoop.

yeah, but not nearly what the East was

least you sent Florida down to Margaritaville, and (less importantly) Georgia as well

You people need a lesson in history.

The nature of divisions means that they will go through cycles as the programs in one division have “up” years and the others have “down” years.

In the mid 1990’s, the SEC West was abysmal. The early 2000’s weren’t exactly banner years for the West, either. The east has been down for about for the last 3 seasons, but in 2007, an SEC East team finished #2 in the AP poll.

and an SEC West team finished #1

Actually an SEC East team finished in the top five every year from 2006 to 2009. Unfortunately, it was usually Florida, so I understand why you used the 2007 example. Still, the point stands.

I don’t think we necessarily need to do away with the East/West split because of imbalance, but if the new team is, as has been discussed, Missouri, then this plan might be better than trying to do a lot of shifting and hope we can preserve rivalries.

Yeah It was hard to choose between a&m or LSU in the first one

But figured that if it was another B12 team that joined, it would be more beneficial for those two teams to have a rivalry. At least they’d have something else to play for other than joining the same conference at the same time. And although I don’t consider the LSU game a true rivalry, that game is usually the best game of the season, and would hate to lose that.

Obviously though, if another team not from the B12 joined pitting them with A&M just because they joined the league at the same time seems kind of ridiculous, when A&M and Arkansas have the history they have.

Agree with you on the names, just can’t think of any good ones. As long as we don’t go with anything like Leaders and Legends I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Take the second one and switch A&M with the 15th team

This allows you to keep Ark-A&M and Ark-LSU
