Alabama Dominates Phil Steele's All-American Team

Yesterday, Phil Steele revealed his preseason All-American Team. Let's break this thing down like with his All-SEC team.

First, here are the top ten teams (well, 12 thanks a tie for tenth) based on weighted score. It's exactly what you'd expect: four points for a first team player, three for a second teamer, two for a third teamer, and one for a fourth teamer.

School No. of Players Score
Alabama 7 22
South Carolina 4 14
Florida State 6 13
Stanford 5 13
Oklahoma 4 13
Oregon 3 12
Nebraska 3 11
Georgia 4 10
Boise State 3 9
Miami (FL) 4 8
Notre Dame 4 8
Oklahoma State 3 8

I had a feeling that Alabama would be on top, but it ran away with the title this year. Interesting that South Carolina managed second on the strength of just four players: Alshon Jeffery (1st team), Devin Taylor (1st), Marcus Lattimore (2nd), and Stephon Gilmore (2nd). The Gamecocks have some high-end talent, but do they have enough everywhere else to repeat as SEC East champs? Also note that Georgia, and not LSU or Arkansas, made this list.

The Razorbacks ended up just on the outside with four players for seven points, followed by Kentucky (!) with two players for five points. Florida was the only other SEC team with multiple selections with two players for three points. LSU, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt all had just one player apiece, though LSU's (Morris Claiborne) was a third team pick while Tennessee's (Malik Jackson) and Vandy's (Casey Hayward) were on the fourth team.

Now, onto offense. Here I'll just keep it to SEC squads.

Position 1st Team 2nd Team 3rd Team 4th Team Total Score
Alabama 2 0 1 0 3 10
South Carolina 1 1 0 0 2 7
Georgia 0 0 1 1 2 3
Kentucky 0 1 0 0 1 3
Arkansas 0 0 1 0 1 2

Alabama and South Carolina lead the way as expected, though I admit I'm kind of surprised that Arkansas doesn't fare better here. Four of the nine selections are linemen, which is also not a real shock. Defense time.

Position 1st Team 2nd Team 3rd Team 4th Team Total Score
Alabama 1 2 1 0 4 12
South Carolina 1 1 0 0 2 7
Arkansas 0 0 2 0 2 4
Kentucky 0 0 1 0 1 2
LSU 0 0 1 0 1 2
Florida 0 0 0 1 1 1
Tennessee 0 0 0 1 1 1
Vanderbilt 0 0 0 1 1 1

Alabama almost doubles up South Carolina here, and quite a few more teams show up. That's to be expected what with defense being this conference's hallmark. Don't get too wrapped up in these numbers though, as only the first three teams even have multiple guys on the team.
