Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

NCAA Tournament Weekend Open Thread

Photo

Well, we got at least two more games around these parts. Kentucky goes up against Ohio State tonight, and Florida plays the villain against the nation's sweetheart Butler tomorrow. I think the Buckeyes will win, but a Kentucky victory is far from being outside the realm of possibility. I also think Florida will beat Butler, but I've been wrong before.

Who do y'all have?

Man, if Florida beats both the Jimmerettes and the Bulldogs, the Gators will be wearing one hell of a black hat to Houston. Not that anyone will notice; as Gasaway wrote at BP today in his game recap, “If this keeps up the Gators are going to be ignored all the way to the national championship.”

Why not?

They dropped the hammer on George Mason in 2006. Sometimes being the bad guy feels good.

Not a year for the #1s, it seems. And unless FSU nudges past VCU in the last couple of minutes, only the SEC will have two Elite 8 teams.

Right you are

SEC is the only conference with two. Anyone pick that before the season? Or even the tournament?

I did in my bracket, although I also have them both losing now rather than making the Final Four.

Since it looks increasingly like the SEC is going to win the national title, . . .

. . . I have to ask whether any conference has ever had the national championship trophies in baseball (South Carolina), basketball (Florida or Kentucky), and football (Auburn) simultaneously.

Yes

At the very least, the SEC has done it before. Kentucky won the basketball title in 1996, Florida won football in 1996, and LSU won baseball back-to-back in 1996-97. Beyond that, I don’t know.

Thanks.

That’s impressive stuff right there . . . both the achievement, and your recollection of it.

Sort of

I knew UK and UF in ’96 and had to look up if a baseball team won the CWS that year. SEC had a chance in ’06 and ’07 with Florida hoops winning back-to-back and Florida and LSU winning in football, but no one came through on the diamond.

Butler is looking really small on the inside. The Gators can feast down low all game.

At the under 8:00 media timeout 1H

Florida is up 23-15 and the lead should be bigger. Butler can’t do anything inside so it’s taking contested jumpers, while the Gators big guys are having a field day. Vernon Macklin has 11 of the 23, and Butler has no one who can guard him.

Florida 33, Butler 32 -- Half

Butler’s a good team and fought hard to get back into the game. Gators gave up some offensive rebounds and allowed some threes, which is how Butler got back in it. They also quit feeding the post so much, which isn’t a good thing given how this game is going.

Under 8:00 TO, 2H

Florida is up 9, but Butler is starting to get some momentum with a combination of hustle and friendly whistles. It’s far from over.

At under 4:00 TO

Gators up four, and it’s getting intense. Florida is perfect from the free throw line while Butler’s about 50%, and that’s the difference.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!

A three on the last play?? Are you kidding me?? Why not drive, and take a higher percentage shot while also hoping for a foul?? Man … what were they thinking? Unreal.

stuff 'bout stuff.

I can't believe they did it again ...

… all they needed was a two, and they shot a three in the last play of overtime. Unbelievable … Florida deserves to lose this game so much. Absolutely ridiculous.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Excuse me, next to last Florida possession.

They got the ball back with 10 seconds left. I hope they miss, ’cause they deserve to lose.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Yeah, that one hurt – did Butler ever have the lead until OT? Gack.

by peachy rex on Mar 26, 2011 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't get it

As soon as Butler began making a run, Florida abandoned what worked. Did it in both halves. If their most creative play when the game is on the line is Walker jacking terrible threes, they earned the loss.

Kentucky is all that remains.

The SEC’s reputation is on the line. And … go!

stuff 'bout stuff.
