Good red zone defense, but once again, we couldn’t stop them from getting there in the first place.

Florida 3, South Carolina 0 -- 6:01 1Q
Settling for a FG after some bizarre play calling on both sides
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Penalties, penalties, penalties!
I’d really appreciate it if the Gamecocks would stop with the penalties. Messy, messy play. At least that one didn’t make it 1st and 20, but sheesh.

Some post-first quarter (and a bit) thoughts:
The good:
We’re running quick no-huddle offensive plays (spread and even OPTION!), which is what we really need to do more often. We don’t have the line or the players to do pro-style formations all the time.
Great heads-up play by Justice Cunningham to catch that tipped ball on 3rd-7. Could easily have been an interception if he doesn’t get it.
Once again, good defense in the red zone.
The bad:
Penalties. We are murdering ourselves with penalties. They killed the first two drives before they started and then we nearly killed that one with a false start on 2nd down. Must stop this.
We’re still not using Damiere Byrd on spread plays.
HBC insists on calling throwing plays when we should be running it down their throats, which killed us on that last third down.
Special teams still sucks. If this is what Wooten is doing in practice, no wonder we aren’t kicking field goals.

Ok St averaging more points than minutes played right now....
They’re up on TT 35-0 only about 3 minutes into the 2nd qt.
Damn.
41-0 now. That’s impressive. What BCS controversy?

Finally, some offense.
Connor Shaw with his fourth TD of the year!
Brandon Wilds is tearing through Florida’s defense like tissue paper. I know that it has to be killing the HBC not to throw more, but if it works, it works.
Alshon Jeffery has now passed the late Kenny McKinley to become South Carolina’s new all-time receiving yards leader.

Radio silliness
It’s way too early for either of these teams to be smelling blood in the water, Ellis.

Uhoh
Dominique Easley is face down on the turf and has not moved. That can’t be good. Hope he’s ok.

South Caolina 14, Florida 3 -- 0:31 2Q
And Tim Brando just said the Gamecocks lead by nine
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
South Carolina up 14-3 at halftime.
My halftime thoughts are really more of the same. Less penalties for Carolina means that we’re able to get the offense going. Great job with the spread and quick plays. Shaw is a bit slow on reading the coverage and options, but at least he can do it, unlike Garcia. And he can run the ball well.
Play calling is much improved in the second quarter. The option out of an I-formation on 4th-and-inches was a beautiful piece of trickery.
I hope Dominique Easley is okay; that looked like a hard hit and he didn’t look good coming off the field. Concussion, maybe?
Halftime is also a good chance to recheck the Muschamp Intensity Meter! This may come in quite handy during the second half.

Good grief.
In the next round of realignment, can we trade in Kentucky for ECU or someone? I’d rather not face them in basketball anymore anyways.

That's been Slive's secret plan all along
He was hoping with the Missouri-A&M introduction hoopla next year, no one would notice Ole Miss and Kentucky had mysteriously disappeared from SEC schedules.
Really?
His season has gone exactly as predicted as early as last year. Lost the first two games, easy schedule means he could win out all the way to the championship game. He’s survived, but he hasn’t really impressed.
neither has Vandy
if Vandy wins out, I’d consider it. But they could very easily lose their next two games and that keeps them home. UGA has an easy schedule, but Vandy is about to be 2-5 in the SEC and 1-3 in the east. I don’t think its impressive enough for coach of the year.

Bad third quarter for the Gamecocks
Florida’s doing what’s really their only hope; pounding us with short passes. Aside from the near-sack on Brantley, defense didn’t do much to stop the Gators from marching down the field on their first 3Q drive. Defense stopped them in the red zone, again, but it would be nice if the defense could stop them before the red zone.
Three terrible play calls after that pass interference. Stop. Running. The. I.
The second Florida drive had better defense, but was saved, twice, by penalties on Carolina. The pass interference on Antonio Allen was questionable, but Jadeveon Clowney’s late hit on Brantley was just plain dumb. No reason for that one.

Vanderbilt on pace for more than 550 yards of total offense
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Huh.
Pitt just had a seven-yard punt out of their own end zone.
Oh, Pitt.

Meanwhile, in strange scores...
Missouri leading Texas 17-5.

Victory!
Defense started the fourth quarter off quite nicely; Melvin Ingram with a great sack on Brantley.
Losing Connor Shaw on that first down just killed the first offensive drive. Ellington couldn’t get anything there. Byrd ran the wrong way on third down; rookie mistake. Florida followed this up with some great offensive plays and quickly scored a touchdown.
South Carolina finally didn’t let a penalty on 1st and 10 kill their second drive; instead, they threw a huge deep ball to Ace Sanders. However, the Gamecocks stalled in the red zone by not running a zone-read offense. Jay Wooten finally got a short FG.
The defense allowed a lot of room for Rainey on Florida’s second drive, but managed to stuff the Gators early and forced a punt.
South Carolina was forced to chew up the clock on the last drive, which meant relying on a shaky offensive line. It started off well; they drew the Gators offsides on 3rd-and-2. The line did quite well the whole drive. South Carolina started playing the zone-read offense again, which helped allow them to punch through the Gators defense.
Florida got the ball back with 42 seconds left, but Brantley got sacked on his last attempt to get into the end zone.
South Carolina’s defense, overall, had a pretty good day. They need to figure out how to stop teams from reaching the red zone instead of stopping them in the red zone. The offense is still very shaky. Spurrier has got to get over himself and run the zone-read/spread/option offense full-time for the Gamecocks to win.

Now everyone looks at Auburn-Georgia for the SEC East outcome
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
I don't even know what go call that play
Other than a touchdown to tie it
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Why is the Army-Navy game on Showtime?
That’s just wrong. That game should always be on broadcast TV.
It's not.
My schedule says that it’s on CBS the week after the SECCG. That’s just a documentary they’ve been advertising.
Unless, of course, I am completely wrong.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 4:22 PM EST up reply actions
Ok, that makes sense.
They gave it the title “The Game of Honor.” They don’t really tell you it’s a documentary though. I figured it was a promo for the game.
I know all the Carolina folks are cheering for Auburn right now, but
since I am contractually obligated to cheer against them I gladly report that UGA is up 14-7 at the end of the 1st qt.
Also
Georgia certainly looked like the superior team in the first quarter.
I still cannot believe South Carolina lost to Auburn.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 4:34 PM EST up reply actions
I think UGA is clearly better, but you can't go to sleep on AU.
If they’ve proven anything it is that they will get back into a game if you let them.
That was hilarious!
Glad I’m not the only one who saw that.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 4:51 PM EST up reply actions
Indeed.
Thought: Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Georgia beat Auburn today and laid an egg against Kentucky next week?
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 5:08 PM EST up reply actions
he was only 20 yards
from a makeable field goal to start the drive and they’d been moving it at will. You don’t take you foot off the gas in the first half when you’re trying to win the division.
by Mark Mandingo on Nov 12, 2011 5:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Granted, but they're also up 4 TDs.
Then again, I’m not too familiar with this idea of, what did you call them? Field goals? How does that work?
And now Auburn coughs up the ball, again.
This is just getting embarrassing for Auburn. Bad, bad play.

Arkansas Tennessee almost underway
For those looking for a game that will be competitive for 15 or so minutes. But not longer
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
For some excellent home cooking, visit blue Boise!
That was not pass interference on 4th and long. Not even close. Awful call.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 7:05 PM EST reply actions
Oh, Boise.
And once again, Boise fails to kick the winning field goal. I suspect that they may have a new special teams coach soon.

Assuming Dooley will start to feel the heat after this
I get that Tenn wants and needs some coaching and program stability, but, well…
He's in a bad situation.
He’s still dealing with the effects of Lame Kitten’s horrid recruiting efforts and numerous violations. He also lost both his main receiver and starting QB before hitting the hardest schedule in the SEC East – LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas. I think they’ll give him another year.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I figure he gets another year to make some progress
and another year after that if he does. But wow did they look bad.
Yeah
They gave him the year zero and year one analogy. That means he needs to pick it up in year two
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Ole Miss is losing to Louisiana Tech.
10-7, 12:00 Q3.
This is happening.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 9:34 PM EST reply actions
Kinda thought it would
What I wasn’t expecting was Western Kentucky hanging with LSU and even getting a safety.
Or, for that matter, MSU hanging with Bama.
But we still have to insist it's about defense
A matter of conference pride
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Did Alabama forget to start their first-string offense?
Did they think they were playing Ole Miss or something?
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 10:09 PM EST up reply actions
MSU always plays us pretty tough
But even with that I don’t think there was any chance that Bama was really up for this game. I saw how they handled the OT last week and they’re not focused right now.
Hopefully, they get it together and take out any anger on Auburn.
Wow
I thought LA Tech might win, but they’re up 27-7 on Ole Miss. 11 minutes or so to go.
Good god.
Houston Nutt may be gone tomorrow instead of the end of the year.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 10:29 PM EST up reply actions
MSU finally scores
Down 17-7 with 12 minutes left.
