In College Football Supremacy, "IT" is Not Always About the Money
Amid the biggest off-season college football story in decades – conference realignment – I’ve noticed a peculiar attitude from fans of other conferences, particularly those of the Pac-10ish(?) persuasion. Scan the comments section of almost any article covering the expansion. Peruse the forums of Pac-10 and/or University of Texas fan sites. You’ll notice a theme among current Pac partisans. Apparently, their conference is on the verge of finally one-upping the hated Southeastern Conference.
"Your days of domination will soon be over," they warn.
"The SEC is quickly becoming a second-rate conference," opines Joe Pac 10 Fan.
"Our money will dwarf yours once we get into the Asian TV markets (yes, they really are trying to do this)".
Here’s the one thing all of these people are completely missing. It’s not all about money – at least when it comes to being the premiere college football conference. The thing the SEC has that the Pac 10 will never have is the "IT" factor. And, all the money in the world can’t buy "IT".
via pbrown16.files.wordpress.com
You’re thinking "Of course it’s about money. It’s always about money. What’s wrong with you?" Well, yes. Obviously, the conference realignment situation we’re now facing is about money. That’s not my point.
The SEC isn’t the most attractive girl at the dance every year because the league makes more money than the others. The league makes more money because it’s the most attractive girl at the dance. It’s not the most attractive girl at the dance because the league has won more BCS Championships than any other conference. It’s won more BCS Championships because it’s the most attractive girl at the dance. The SEC is the most attractive girl at the dance because it has "IT".
So, what is "IT", you ask? IT was best described by Mario Casem of Alcorn State University:
"In the East, college football is a cultural exercise. On the West Cost, it is a tourist attraction. In the Midwest, it is cannibalism. But in the South, college football is a religion, and every Saturday is a holy day."
IT is many things:
- IT will forever separate the SEC from most other conferences.
- IT is why Jim Plunkett and Ronnie Lott are celebrities on the West Coast while Archie Manning and Billy Cannon are folk heroes in the South.
- IT is the difference between 70,000 screaming Gamecocks packing their stadium for a 0-11 year while the fans of most Pac 10 schools simply find other things to do when their program is down.
- IT is an entire region living, breathing and drinking college football every single day of the year.
- IT is caring more about your school than some NBA team.
- IT is caring more about your school than some of your family members.
- IT is Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium.
- IT inspired the late, great Lewis Grizzard.
- IT is the party in The Grove – before, during and long after the game.
- IT is the Iron Bowl.
- IT is why most neutral college football fans around the country would rather watch LSU and Florida or Tennessee and Georgia or Ole Miss and Arkansas go at it on a Saturday afternoon as opposed to Oregon and Washington, UCLA and USC, or Arizona and ASU.
- IT is about love and hate and every emotion falling between the two, and how those emotions manifest amid the electricity between the hedges in Athens when Auburn comes to town.
- IT is witnessing 90,000
unbearable rednecksloyal Crimson Tide fans come to their feet with a roar when old black and white footage of "the Bear" appears on the video board before each home game. - IT is the Immaculate Deflection.
- IT is pulling an upset against the Mighty Gators on a hot, muggy afternoon in the Swamp.
- IT is sitting in a foggy, damp stadium in Baton Rouge as Billy Cannon’s 1959 punt return is rubbed in the collective face of Rebel fans via the Jumbotron.
- IT is deviled eggs, fried chicken, potato salad, gumbo, jambalaya and your friend's grandma's famous bourbon balls.
- IT is temporarily setting individual school spirit aside for a brief moment and chanting "SEC! SEC!" after defeating a formidable non-conference foe in January.
- IT is 50,000 maroon-clad, stubborn Bulldogs ringing their cowbells in celebration of winning the Egg Bowl – despite their season being over.
- IT is the Vol Navy, which, by the way, could kick your Husky Navy’s ass.
- IT is knowing the best watering holes and restaurants in every SEC town.
- IT is "Rocky Top", "From Dixie With Love" and "My Old Kentucky Home".
- IT is the tears those tunes bring.
- IT's peeling the red wax as you christen another Fall Saturday with the aroma of a newly opened bottle of Maker's Mark - at 7:30 in the morning, the perfect time to switch from bloody marys to whiskey.
- IT is Eli Gold, Larry Munson and Jack Crystal.
- IT is an old man named Mr. Two Bits, a bulldog named Uga and an eagle named "Tiger".
- IT is Roll Tide! Geaux Tigahs! War Eagle! Hotty Toddy! And Hail Dear Ol’ State!
- IT is college football at its very best.
To our Pac 10 friends, we say "good luck" with your expansion. Perhaps you will get that Asian market. Maybe you’ll find someone other than USC to win a BCS National Title. Maybe you’ll even figure out a way to temporarily one-up Mike Slive’s sweetheart deal with ESPNABCMikeyMouseBilderbergsIlluminati. Go for it. Hitch your wagon to the stars!
Just remember that no matter what happens, the SEC will always be The SEC. And, there’s nothing you could ever do to change that.

a super conference does not worry me...
The SEC has great teams, great recruiting bases, and tremendous fan support. Ulike the Big 12, qual revenue sharing and respect for each conference member. That’s why SEC teams cheer for conference rivals during bowl games. Everyone else is chasing the SEC model of success.
Not everyone...
unless you mean the 12 team model. I’m certainly glad the Big 10 isn’t ESPN’s whore and instead has ownership in it’s own network.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Woah there
I don’t root for Auburn during bowl games. Just wanna make that clear.

the big 10
IS copying the SEC model. Adding a quality (Nebraska) team and a championship game, to make the Big 10 relative in November… (Jo Pa’s words, by the way ,before you add some wise ass comment).
The SEC could EASILY have their own network ,but get a lot more publicity & promotion nationally with an espn/abc partnership than by going to their own network, & that is something that the big 10 does not get.
And in case you forgot...
OSU is 0-9 All-Time vs the SEC
i like that stat. could you be so kind to give us those losses.
i know the florida and lsu losses (scores)but please give me the rest. thank you.

What the SEC does not get...
is ownership of the network is invaluable. Your return with ESPN is fixed (sure, it can be renegoitated but not ad infinitum). The BTN’s exposure will grow. Revenue is growing. It’s always better to have control.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
So instead of farming out the work to a private company
It’s more noble (based on your initial characterization of the SEC deal) for public universities to become part of a private corporation themselves. Who’s putting profit ahead of academics again?
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
The BTN...
has shows that specifically highlight the academics of the member institutions. Does ESPN do that for the SEC?
Again, the Big 10 controls its own network.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Ah, yes, and I'm sure that's part of the reason they did it
And it’s so much better to create a for-profit business that makes money off your academics. No concerns about selling out academics there. Except that you’re selling them.
But other than that …
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
LOL...
You are really reaching on this one.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
No he's not.
Nearly all universities are for-profit enterprises. You tried to pull the “the SEC is made up of a bunch of money-hungry whores” bull on us and got your nonsense exposed. Deal with it.

Of course...
but is it whoring yourself out if you are the one in complete control?

I like that my athletic conference is good enough at athletics that it doesn’t have to brag about its academics

THIS!
The SEC, Big Ten, Pac 10, etc DO NOT EXIST in academic contexts. Why academics are somehow an issue here is laughable.

Research the CIC...
The Big 10 certainly exists in an academic context.
What’s laughable is the academic “standards” in the SEC.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Exactly.
The Pac 10 and Big 10 didn’t add Colorado and Nebraska respecitively for their academic contributions to the conferences. They added them to increase national competitiveness, namely conference championships. Let’s make an attempt to focus on what athletic conferences are drawn and created for, and not reaching for crutches to stand on when your conference falls short of the SEC.
I play for keeps.
The SEC...
doesn’t like academics being brought up because they are so putrid in the South.
The Big 10 always has and always will consider itself more than merely an athletic conference.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Nonsense
If it weren’t for athletics, the Big Ten wouldn’t exist. The rest is just cosmetics so that the Big Ten can feel superior at something since they obviously aren’t at sports.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
The Big 10 has fared well...
against the SEC in football over the past decade.
Basically going .500.
Oh, and it also has superior academics.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Your arrogance is only superceded by your ignorance.
I do agree that as far “college rankings” by US News or some other orginization that the big ten schools are ranked higher. I have read your posts that assert that somehow by attending a big ten school it equates to success, or that a degree from a big ten institution is somehow “better” than those from the SEC. Your ludicrous statements show your ignorance and ineptitude.
SEC schools DO have programs within their respective institutions that are nationally ranked, so spare us the academic superiority rants.
In the midwest, a big ten degree would be preferred to one from the SEC. But, if you came down south, that degree from osu would not be held in the same esteem as you seem to hold it. In fact, you might have someone from mcneese state hired over you in louisiana or a grad from the university of memphis hired over you in Memphis.
The same regional bias would if you went to the Northeast. An ivy league or boston private school would be preferred over your big ten education.
So spare us the same tired argument, it doesn’t wash in the real world.. much like the stench of those buckeye losses to the SEC teams.
Ohio State
has more alumni than pretty much any other school. The people who attend aren’t simply from Ohio or even the midwest. They are from all over the world. I realize regionalism is big in south but that isn’t true every else.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Neat
Next time OSU gets beat by an SEC team you can console yourself by thinking your degree is somehow better than mine.

I have no doubt...
my degree is better…regardless of what the football team does. (Big 10 grads don’t rate our degree by the quality of the football team…that’s what SEC grads do).
It’s funny how it’s always mentioned that OSU is 0-9 in bowl games against the SEC. Wonder why it’s never mentioned OSU is 7-2-1 against the SEC during the regular season?
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Because three of those wins are against Kentucky and three are against Vanderbilt
The other was a three-point home win against LSU.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Those teams don't play in the SEC?
OSU fans care about the 3 three things…
1. Beating Michigan
2. Winning a Big Ten title
3. Playing in the Rose Bowl
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
The point:
When Ohio State plays quality SEC teams, it’s 1-10-1. When it plays two of the worst teams in the conference, it’s 6-1. (They actually lost to Vanderbilt once.) That’s not really all that impressive.
In other words, the reason the regular-season record isn’t brought up as much is because it would be equivalent to an SEC team bragging about its record against Big Ten teams in the regular season if they only played Indiana and Northwestern.
And given the results in bowl games against the SEC, I can see why you would rather play in the Rose Bowl. Our teams prefer the national championship game.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
You apparently...
know very little about the history of college football if you feel the BCS “national championship” is the end all, be all. Or if you feel it even has siginificant meaning. The NCAA has never recognized a D1 football champhionship. The BCS has not changed that fact. At the end of the day it’s still all based on someon’s opinion.
What I posted are things OSU can control. They have always had meaning for OSU and they always will.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
You employ a neat little rhetorical trick
Whenever someone refutes your few factual points, you resort to a personal attack. I don’t see how someone’s opinion of the BCS national championship game — which is part of a contractual structure supported by every conference in college football (yes, including the midmajors) — is related to their knowledge of college football history at all.
But I’m intrigued by the idea that the Rose Bowl is somehow meaningful while the BCS championship game is meaningless. I mean, if you were going to support a playoff, that would be one thing, and the personal attacks would be understandable — while those who oppose a playoff argue points, those who support a playoff generally just attack the people who oppose a playoff or resort to arguing that it’s the only “true” way to determine a champion, which is nonsense.
But if you’re going to argue that the Rose Bowl is something worthwhile, while the national championship is not … well, I don’t see your point. And the little slur you tucked in there is reason enough not to bother arguing with you beyond this comment. Have fun mouthing off in here all you want. I’m done, and I’d encourage everyone else commenting to be done as well.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
I do support a playoff...
How anyone can argue that a champion is crowned when it is based on opinion is beyond me. How is it nonsense to point that out?
The Rose Bowl has meaning for OSU because they get there by their play on the field. Not by any writer’s or coach’s opinion.
I also like how SEC fans make two different arguments. First they argue that the SEC dominates the Big 10. When it is shown that the SEC in fact does not dominate the Big 10 they say 0-9 for OSU in bowl games. It’s two different arguments. Michigan’s record against SEC teams is 20-5-1. Does that mean Michigan would win the SEC every year? Of course not.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
Are you saying that it should be noted more that
OSU is 7-11-1 against SEC teams including all games?
If so, then great. That’s a fine accomplishment I suppose.
You don't actually belive this
(Big 10 grads don’t rate our degree by the quality of the football team…that’s what SEC grads do).
I'll take my degree from a top 10 program at top 50 University
and put it up against your Big 10 degree any day.

i've been looking at the college football portion of espn and it has said for about a week.....
thatt both okie and texas a&m were invited to the sec a few weeks ago. is this true or not ? i’m pretty sure i saw an article on here that said they were not. i just want someone to clear the issue up. thanks.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Fedor: He once had an awkward moment in the cage, just to see what it feels like. Sharks have a week dedicated to him. He would show his feminine side if he had one. He is a lover, not a fighter, but don't get any ideas. He is the most important man in the world. Stay thirsty my comrades b/c i will never fight in the UFC. Sorry Fedor but in America Budweiser is the King of beers and Lesnar is a clydesdale while Fedor is just a mule. Beating Werdum proves nothing. Beat Lesnar, Carwin. JDS, Velasquez or Overeem and i'll be impressed. Just one of them. College Football is still the best sport out there.
