BREAKING NEWS, TAKE 19 1/2: DEREK DOOLEY TO COACH TENNESSEE

Against my better judgment, we'll go ahead and tell you that Derek Dooley is REPORTEDLY the next REPORTED head coach at Tennessee REPORTEDLY. (How many ESPN writers does it take to compose a one-sentence news update? Two, apparently.)

Dooley takes a job turned down by David Cutcliffe, Troy Calhoun, Kyle Whittingham, Will Muschamp and, in an embarrassing but ultimately harmless oversight, Timothy Geithner.

Dooley has done a solid job at Louisiana Tech and was likely in line for a promotion at some point. But he's gone from a mid-tier WAC program to a team that expects to compete for SEC championships every year. You have to wonder if he would have gotten that promotion if his name were Derek Smith.

It's not, of course, and it does matter that he's the son of one of the best coaches in SEC history. You have to learn something that way.

Tennessee is about to find out if it's enough.

They didn't really have a choice

Everyone and their brother were turning them down…..

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

Yeah, I bet they could have gotten Nikki Meyer for way less.

Mike Shula

So much for genetics determining much about inate coaching ability. As a child of two Vandy graduates, I am laughing my ass off. The only problem is I am exhausted, having laughed non-stop for four days and nights.

why do you think tennessee was turned down by so many coaches?

is the program in trouble? does every coach know that bama, florida, georgia and lsu have a lock in this conference for the next 8 years? just my opinion.

I dont know… Tenn was in the top 10 for awile in recruiting until Kiffin left. Just a couple seasons ago they had a top 5 recruiting class. Might be awile before they get back on track, but thier in the right direction getting rid of that jerk. Even if he had a high recruiting class….
