Sprints Is Winning, So It's Losing Votes in the AP Poll // 09.09.09

Team Speed Kills Now last night. We talked UCLA-Tennessee, Auburn-Mississippi State and SEC Power Poll. The podcast version:

This is the beginning of the end of the dynasty. The Gators are losing votes in the AP poll.

The Associated Press released its Week 1 poll today, and the No. 1 Gators received 56 of 60 first-place votes, two fewer than last week.

And they'll keep losing votes if they ... win?

Since Florida is expected to trounce every opponent by double digits except maybe LSU -- and that's a big maybe after that Washington game -- it's too difficult for them to create real buzz unless they are the only undefeated team left. ...

I wouldn't be surprised if Florida is getting 35 of the 60 votes by week 10, even if their record is unblemished.

If you'll excuse me now, I'm going to go self-medicate this headache with a sledgehammer.

Star-divide

WR Andre Debose will miss the season
The Gators probably could have used him for depth, but he'll undergo surgery.

How much does one guy have to endure?
In this case, Brandon Deaderick, whom you might recall was shot last week.

Deaderick is believed to be out of town. His maternal grandmother died on Sunday, the day after Deaderick inspired his teammates by playing in the Crimson Tide's 34-24 come-from-behind victory over Virginia Tech.

True

But Auburn didn’t have anyone like FSU on that ‘04 schedule. The team that should be in trouble is Texas, who didn’t even deign to schedule a single BCS opponent in the non-conference.

Ooh! Grr! Scandal!

You mean somebody’s writing about Rrr! Controversy! in the Week 1 polls? Suddenly, Florida is going to be the exception to the ‘never bump a team ahead of another team when they both win’ rule?

Florida has absolutely nothing to worry about if they don’t lose. If they do lose one game, then it gets a little more interesting, but that’s the case for every team.

(I’m sorry, but I live in statistics for my graduate school career, and extrapolations like this drive me insane. Forgive me.)

Georgia fell from the No. 1 spot between the preseason and Week 1 last year without losing a game, and then in Week 3 they fell down to third without losing a game.

Granted, Florida has a much larger cushion this year than Georgia ever did. But, it’s not unprecedented and it’s a legit concern if LSU, Georgia, and FSU all disappoint because then, who does Florida have left to impress with before the SEC title game? Texas has no BCS teams in its non conference, but it does have the Oklahoma schools, Texas Tech Missouri, and Kansas.

By Week 3, USC had beaten Ohio State and Oklahoma had beaten Cincinnati.

Georgia’s 2-game slate couldn’t compare at that point in time. Florida has plenty of quality teams coming up, and winning out will have them in the championship game.

But suppose they do win out, along with 2 other teams. And suppose those two other teams win out in a more impressive fashion (e.g. Florida squeaks out of several games). There are legitimate ways for Florida to fall down a spot or two. But to call it on account of voter boredom is a little pre-emptive at this point in time.

Also worth mentioning is that Georgia underwhelmed against Georgia Southern

And were perceived to disappoint in Week 3 against South Carolina even though they always do that. Florida so far has done exactly what’s expected of them. Different situations.

Of all the SEC teams...

who really have no room to think they should absolutely beat Mississippi State it’s the Auburn Tigers. First, y’all squeeked by State last year in the 3-2 snoozefest. And secondly, State beat Auburn two years ago in Jordan-Hare.
