NCAA Regionals Open Thread

Your humble correspondent should be here most of the day Sunday, continuously updating the board, who's advancing and who's eliminated. Five of the remaining teams -- LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Arkansas -- are in very good shape. Georgia and Vanderbilt are in trouble.

To view or listen to your team's game:

--Go to http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2009/ncaa_bracket_DI_baseball.html.
--Select the regional.
--Select the game you're interested in.
--See if there is a "watch" or "listen" icon next to your team's name. Or the other team's.
--If there are no icons, use GameTracker. There's no sound or actual video, but you can see what happens.

USC winning so far...

The South Carolina vs. George Mason game is in a lightning delay in the bottom of the seventh inning of the NCAA regional at East Carolina. The Gamecocks are leading 9-3.

By the way . . .

. . . although Florida State is looking better and better after being tied with Marist at the midpoint of the sixth inning, that game is still going on, so Georgia’s Saturday opponent has not yet officially been determined.

Seminoles 13-4 in the middle of the eighth, if anyone cares.

That's odd

When I looked — before your comment posted — I thought it showed that FSU had already won.

Well, in any case, it turned out to be true, so a bullet dodged. I’ll keep a closer eye on the CBS site in the future to see if there’s some sort of glitch.

The good news : Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina have advanced to regional finals.

The so-so news : Vanderbilt and Georgia are in the second game of the losers’ bracket.

The bad news : Alabama is done.

As I write Arkansas is hammering away at host Oklahoma, looking to advance to the regional final; LSU and Baylor are locked up 2-2 in the ninth.

(Meanwhile, in the women’s tournament, UGA survived two elimination games today to move on to the semis to face Washington; Bama crushed Arizona earlier and now faces ASU, with the winner taking on Florida. That’s right – the SEC could have three of four semi-finalists…)

SEC has three of four softball semi-finalists

As for the men:

Alabama is the only team that’s done.

As peachy rex noted, Georgia lost in what was a good game until the 8th inning. Vanderbilt clobbered Indiana to advance to a second elimination game.

Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas, Ole Miss and LSU win and get to wait for their opponents to get out of the loser’s bracket.

Overall, a good day for the conferece at 6-2.

Texas and BC go to the 24th

It’s now the longest game in NCAA history.

They’re also setting and breaking records for the most ABs in a game. Great fun if you’re up.

And so ends the 2008-'09 scholastic year

What a crummy, crummy, crummy, crummy, crummy, crummy, crummy, crummy year for University of Georgia athletics . . . at least in sports involving players with Y chromosomes.

Lunch and a couple of errands before locking down for the night stretch

Will return shortly to update the Vandy/MTSU game.

It might not be much consolation for Dawg fans, but Ohio State is getting rocked right now.

by peachy rex on May 31, 2009 4:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder how many teams have given up 20 runs twice in a regional… I mean, this is just ridiculous.

"It might not be much consolation"?

It is absolutely 100 per cent consolation for Bulldog fans.

Thanks

Losing to a legitimate baseball program like Florida State, I can take.

Losing to a Big Ten team, for crying out loud? That’s just shameful. . . .

Ah, well… but you have to be pleased that your softball team outlasted Washington in an epic in the first semi. Lawrie’s a brute of a pitcher, too – she threw almost 400 pitches in the final day of their regional this season.

Argh – I believe that’s two runners for UF nailed at home… and neither was a force. Let’s try a little less aggression, guys, and a little more prudence.

by peachy rex on May 31, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No beating today is going to hold a candle to FSU v OSU, but UF is now up 12-1 in the top of the 5th – Miami is on its fourth pitcher.

Vandy, Arky, Ole Miss and LSU all lead by various margins (and all except Vandy advance with wins, as does Florida.)

I look away for a moment to check softball, and Miami scores four.

It’s going to be damnably tough for the baseball tournament to make a moment as astounding as the finish of the UF-Bama semi – down three runs, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Gators win with a walk-off grand slam.

Not that interesting…

Incidentally, Oklahoma drew the #7 seed in both baseball and softball this year, and both teams got knocked out in the regionals. I’ll refrain from drawing any comparisons to ‘Big Game Bob.’

As much as it sucks to be a Georgia fan right now . . .

. . . there’s something to be said for the fact that the Diamond Dogs, who had significant contributions from six freshmen position players and three freshmen pitchers, made it to the tournament despite facing a schedule that included Arkansas, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, Louisiana State, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt, all of whom are looking varying degrees of pretty dadgum good right about now.

That’s just a little something for the folks who want to look on the bright side, which I don’t.
