Sprints Isn't Going to be the Central Michigan Coach // 12.30.09

SUGAR BOWL / URBAN MEYER DETIREMENT

Gators lose another
LB A.J. Jones is out of the Sugar Bowl because of injury, but there are no "academic casualties."

Where's the denial?
Florida's quarterbacks coach is denying he talked with Central Michigan about their head coaching opening, but that's about the extent of Scot Loeffler's denials right now.

"All I'm doing right now, like I said I've not spoken to anyone up there,'' Loeffler said. "We've got a heck of a competition we're going to be facing on Friday, so I'm concentrating on doing everything in my power to help this team win another bowl game.''

If Central Michigan has a fullback-style quarterback with a four-second delivery, this is obviously their guy.

Major Wright can be a little melodramatic
As in:

"This man could literally die over football games and stuff like that, so that's why everyone is like, 'Oh my God." We can't really look at it like, 'Oh, Urb is leaving. Why is he doing this? Why is he doing that?' He has a family to take care of outside this football team. No one would be closer to him than his daughters and son. You can't get any closer than that."

There have been no indications that Meyer's health concerns are quite that severe.

You can put away the tin foil hats now
If you believe that Urban Meyer faked his Hamlet routine to boost ticket sales -- and I have no idea why you would -- at least take comfort in the fact that it did't work.

UF expected a bigger boost, especially because of the Urban Meyer drama over the weekend. Gajda said the office barely sold 100 tickets since the weekend.

How anything we saw this weekend was supposed to make Florida fans want tickets more is still a mystery to me, but there you have it.

Tebows already in the NFL
It's Pam Tebow and a Super Bowl commercial about abortion -- that shouldn't be controversial in the least -- but Tebowmania has officially hit Sunday.

Mitch Barnhart will try to bring Rich Brooks back
The Kentucky athletics director is waiting to see if he can make Brooks an offer he can't refuse.

"I want him to be our football coach. I think he's good for Kentucky," said Barnhart, who spoke before Tuesday's Kentucky-Hartford basketball game. "He's good for our players. And that's important." ...

Barnhart said Brooks hasn't indicated to him which factors will weigh the most heavily in his decision whether to retire. When asked if he planned to ask Brooks what needed to be done to retain him, Barnhart said, "We'll have to see how the conversation goes. He'll have to talk to his family and get through that piece of the conversation, and we'll visit again. If there's some things that he says 'I really need to have happen for me to stay,' I'll say, 'OK we can do that.'"

Barnhart gives a fascinating preview of his pitch to Brooks if he gets a chance: There are pretty decent facilities in Lexington and his assistants are making good money. The key indicator will be whether Brooks greets those comments with his favorite word.

Why does anyone have the password to your Twitter account?
Joe Barksdale continues to try to explain his supposed tweet about "just another reason goin' to LSU was the biggest mistake of my life." He says that "A few too many people had my password." Who are you giving your Twitter password to?

This might be putting way too much thought into this
The Mayor has a poll on whether Russ should go from interim mascot to full-time Uga.

In our "Captain Obvious" story of the day ...
Who paid for this poll? Because they obviously have far too much money. A majority of college football fans want a playoff? I could have told you that much -- and I'm not pro-playoff. But there was one bit of the poll I found interesting.

Fans are evenly divided over the Bowl Championship Series, the current method for determining the college football national champion: 43 percent have a favorable opinion of the B.C.S. and 45 percent have an unfavorable opinion.

43 percent? That seems awfully, awfully high. And I would have guessed a lot more than a two-point gap between favorable and unfavorable.
