Game clock

How many games have had play clock issues this season? It seems like about half.

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 12:26 PM EST reply actions

The deafening silence.

Is that for the opening moments of the games? The cupcakes on the schedule? The total suck displayed by Arkansas in the first 2 minutes?

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 12:35 PM EST reply actions

I’m just waking up, man… Florida hasn’t kicked off quite yet on 360, which is the only place to see the game, pretty much.

Well, good morning to you, Rex.

Arkansas an Miss St are tied at 7 five minutes into the game. At this pace they’ll both hit 50.

’Morning. Sounds like an exciting game.

The teams appear to be awake already

14 points in the first five minutes

I haven't been able

to watch the last two weekends so I’m feeling out of it. Mallet threw his 5th int of the season in the first series, but made up for it with the throw to Adams.

I don't know how Ryan Mallett doesn't shoot Greg Childs

How many perfect passes has he dropped this season?

Don't know the number

But they figured prominently in both the Ole Miss and Florida games.

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

So Florida forces a three-and-out, commits a roughing the punter penalty (could have been a ‘running into’ penalty, but would have been a first anyhow), then FIU throws a pick on the first attempt of the revived drive… Spikes drifts right into the passing lane, easy catch, easy run, TD.

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 12:48 PM EST reply actions

Keep running into the kicker in the rule book

A guy whose momentum carries him into the kicker should not get a 15-yard penalty. You’ll basically make teams avoid any attempt to block the punt.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

From Athens
Reserve offensive lineman Jonathan Owens on Thursday became the third player arrested since Oct. 13 on a traffic-related charge.

The redshirt freshman from Blountsville, Ala., was arrested by university police at East Carlton Street and River Road for driving a motorcycle without a license.

Wow. Should Georgia just start providing drivers to players, or would that be an impermissible benefit?

by cocknfire on Nov 21, 2009 1:02 PM EST reply actions

Of course

because clearly the police forced him onto that motorcycle without a license, then waited for him to drive by.

It’s just not possible that he got on the motorcycle himself and then rode it in a way that caused the campus police to pull him over. It must be a conspiracy.

Go to Tennessee and I guarantee you it’ll be different.

My best friend (and UF student) knows about as much about sports

as I do about 17th century European pottery. That is, nothing. He was complaining about how much money the athletic department gets until I told him that the athletic department donates millions of their own donations to the general scholarship fund, which finances almost the entirety of his precious education. He’s now a big, if incredibly naive and casual, UF football fan.

It’s amazing just how many places exist and thrive here simply because of the football program.

Officials made a nice grounding call in UF-FIU. The announcers kept saying ‘the QB got hit as he was throwing’, but they had it backwards – the QB threw because he was about to be hit… the blitzer was coming in free, and the QB heaved it up just in time, but he couldn’t see anything because the defender was right in his face, and the ball didn’t land anywhere near an eligible receiver. Text-book.

You know, it’s nice – in a world returning to its orbit kind of way – to see SEC teams really beat the absolute stuffing out of their weenies. There have been far too many actual contests this year in guarantee games… bad for our rep as the biggest, baddest bullies on the block.

Also, Florida’s offence next year is going to be Spurrier-esque – none of this dive, option keeper, Tebow-smash stuff, baby, we’re going all downfield all the time! Throw the ball like it’s 1996! Yeehaw!

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 3:49 PM EST reply actions

Brantley’s three drives were basically next year’s offence, should be be the same play-calling and certainly the same personnel except the running backs (Scott’s maybe fourth string depending on how you count ‘em – the bruisers Moody and Gillislee were out or limited, and Demps and Rainey were shut down early in the third.) Plus of course Debose, getting a crack at being the next Percy. It will be a lot fun watching it – shouldn’t be really similar to anything Meyer has run at Florida so far.

Well, you have my excuses – not our division, we’ve played one and won’t play the other, big non-con rivalry game and SEC championship coming up… as kleph says, the season in running down, so it’s good to savour the games that are left, but this one has minimal interest other than that. Not even much rooting interest – LSU is kind of a rival, technically, but I don’t think many Florida fans think of them that way, and it’d be better for us if they won anyhow.

by Chris Pendley on Nov 21, 2009 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

I know Fllorida Fans are going to hate this but..

Urban Meyer might just go. Florida is losing a lot on both sides of the ball, that if he has to start to put together a new team he might as well do it at ND.

I think there are several reasons why he wouldn’t go, but there are also going to be “millions” of reasons for him to go.

by MexiHog on Nov 21, 2009 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

I hear both of those reasons a lot, both in the media and from non-Florida fans, but – not to be impolite – they bear little resemblance to the actual situation. Even with graduations and some likely early entries, Florida will have a great deal of talent coming back, and quite possibly a top-5 class coming in – far from a rebuilding situation, especially given the likely state of the Eastern Division in 2010. And Florida’s athletic program is routinely one of the five richest in the country (which ND’s is not), and it doesn’t have a gargantuan buyout hanging over it.

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Peachy, I’m loathe to agree with you – but I have to.

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that Florida will probably still be one of the better teams in the SEC next year, I’m just pretty much saying that having that many new starters would only add to any incli nation Meyer might have to leaving. He still has an amazing stable of talent in Florida, and actually I’m one of those people that wants him to stay at Florida, I think the better the rest of the SEC is the better is for my team too. Pus it would be real nice to beat a 2 (or possibly more) championship winning coach.

by MexiHog on Nov 21, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

The SEC is positively loaded with great coaches right now, for sure, and there are none who are really dreadful.

I think ND will ask, and he’ll politely decline – I’d be surprised if any coach at a school with routine national title hopes would leave for ND these days, unless they really wanted to get out of town for some reason. That’s one reason Kelly’s a good bet for them… far more has to break right for a school like Cincy to get in the picture than for Bama, Florida, Texas, USC etc.

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think their list would probably be something like this:

1. Urban Meyer (just to see if he’d say yes)
1b. Brian Kelly
2. Jim Harbaugh

and then they’d probably start looking at assistant coaches like Srong

by MexiHog on Nov 21, 2009 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

Not a bad idea, really.

He more than deserves a chance somewhere, and really, it’s Notre Dame’s defense that’s been the issue.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Chris Pendley on Nov 21, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

I was actually thinking that earlier

But I really doubt he would leave right now even if he did get an offer. He has something really great going on here, and hopefully if we can get some good defensive depth, then we would be one of if not the favorites for the West next season. Plus he would have to rebuild ND and start over from scratch, and take another hit to his persona. If he goes to a BCS bowl next year, then I think we would have to worry about him leaving.

I totally agree. From all reports he’s really found a home in Fayetteville. I like his style. I like his attitude and I’m enamored of his offense. Now we just need a defense.

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

A nice long successful run at Arky could really refurbish his rep too.

Strong’s another excellent suggestion, though after the Willingham fiasco and then the Weis soap-opera, ND might be in the market for a guy they can deep-six without drama if things go poorly… and that’s easier with a white guy.

I could totally see Dexter as a fullback, mix things up a bit, bust through the line at warp speed.

There was another game recently – maybe it was one of Florida’s – where a defensive guy had an easy recovery but blew it because he tried to scoop and run instead of just falling on it.

Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.

by kleph on Nov 21, 2009 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty much – they had a Florida/Bama run of settling for figgies, and the dreadful freakish bad luck of a block & return, but they’ve dominated statistically. They should win.

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe – they shouldn’t, given equal records, but a potentially stronger finish and the higher profile could do it. Certainly Penn St is still firmly in the at-large picture, though they could use some upsets.

Clemson won as well, so the ACC championship game is set.

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

Given head to head, Iowa would get the nod. Don’t think that it will be the criteria for bowl committee.
Also, Clemson won divison before game because of BC loss. Tech needs them to have as much percieved momentum as possible. I hope the Dawgs can deflate that ballon next week though.

by JoeinSavannah on Nov 21, 2009 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Ah – hadn’t noticed that BC had already played.

If Boise St gets an at-large (with the others going to TCU and Florida/Bama), the choice for that last spot will be very interesting indeed. Assuming there’s no curve-ball – the worst for the at-large hopefuls would be a previously undefeated Texas losing in the Big-12 championship game

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Sugar gets Cincy

They have the last pick. Midmajor goes to the Fiesta, Penn St to Orange, leaving autobid Cincy out of it.

between the failure to make the TD, onside kick, poor play calling, crappy clock management, and not having th FG unit ready – It reminds me of the South Park episode where all of the little league teams are trying to lose in the playoffs so they can get out of baseball.

Agreed – anyone who’s willing to move would be willing to take a call from ND, since it’s very unlikely any of the first tier programs will have vacancies this year (unless one of their coaches inexplicably gets happy feet and wanders off to South Bend.)

LSU was 8-5 last year and would end up there again if they lose to Arkansas and the bowl opponent

Neither of which is far-fetched at this point. I’m not sure that’s good enough after the standard he and Nick Saban set.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Nov 21, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Last season was just bad enough to get doubts going, I think – especially since Miles has to deal with the “yeah, he won, but that was with Saban’s players” line of doubting. And with the coaching standards in the West getting better, LSU might worry about falling behind.

by peachy rex on Nov 21, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

The other side of the coin:

Who would LSU attract to replace him? They fancy themselves among the elite in Baton Rouge. They won’t accept a Chizik-like risky hire will they?

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Him? Harbaugh?

Don’t jinx your wish for Charlie to take over for Spurrier!

by HogInAiken on Nov 21, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

Strong and Harbaugh are both interesting possibilities. LSU is one of the few potential jobs that could really complicate the ND search, though perhaps not for Midwestern guys like Kelly.

Frankly, I think he survives even if LSU loses out. But next season he’d be on a very short leash.
