The Hits Keep Coming from Florida-Georgia
By now, you've probably seen the Brandon Spikes eye gouging thing. In case you haven't:
In Tim Tebow's postgame comments, he talked of dirty play by Georgia. I have seen plenty of allegations to that effect without accompanying video evidence, but Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post provided a YouTube a cheap shot by Georgia's Nick Williams that undoubtedly was part of what Tebow alluded to:
It was a rough game that got chippy on both sides. Guys did things they shouldn't have done. There was more than just what these two videos show. I think that about wraps this story up for today, okay?

Do you like this story?

Yep
That one was obvious. Pretty bad. I don’t really condone rooting to hurt other players but I have to say I’m a little glad that Georgia was playing ‘chippy’. I feel like so often they go down there and roll over and look like the less inspired team. I’d prefer they don’t come off as a bunch of thugs but at this point, any kind of passion is good enough for me.
Yep, that’s what it’s come to

For one thing,
one cheap shot doesn’t justify another, which apparently Tebow doesn’t realize. Also, a late hit like that is not even close to eye gouging. Spikes could have blinded that guy. There’s absolutely no excuse for what he did, even if other people were getting in cheap shots.
And the “eye-gouging” on Spikes earlier in the game was most definitely unintentional, and if Spikes had his chin strap on tighter, it wouldn’t have happened anyway.
I’m not attempting to justify anything Spikes did; read my prior story I wrote when the news broke. The point is that he was far from the only person who did something wrong in the game, and cheap shotting someone who got a concussion a month ago is just as bad as an eye gouge. No incident of bad behavior justifies more bad behavior, and Spikes is right to be suspended. However, simply reporting on his act to the exclusion of all else isn’t telling the whole story.

That comment was a bit more directed towards the Tebow comment than anything.
But I still believe there’s a difference between a late hit or something like that and sticking your fingers in somebody’s eyes.
Oh, come now.
Enough with the Tebow concussion. If his concussion is still a situation where a hard hit is a danger to him, he shouldn’t on the field, period. The late hit against him should have been a penalty (obviously), but it was no more malicious than any other blatant late hit on any other QB.
just because something is preventable, doesn't excuse it
that’s like saying “Ealey should just wear a visor”
Oh yeah, Year2, that definitely wraps up that story...
…because getting a late hit on a player is definitely as reprehensible as blatantly trying to gouge another man’s eyes out. I see no flaws at all in that conclusion…at all. No, really, I’m being serious. Brilliant analysis.

You missed the point
The point of that part at the end wasn’t an attempt at “brilliant analysis.” The point was to try to put an end to the endless dead horse beating around here, and it appears it didn’t work.

And you missed mine
Why would proof of a single late hit, which is ostensibily proof that the game was getting chippy on both sides, put to bed a discussion about one of the most egregious acts I — and apparently everyone else who isn’t a blind homer — have ever seen on a football field?
You are essentially saying, “Well, things were getting chippy, and when things get chippy, linebackers are apt to rip peoples eyes out.” If that sentence sounds ridiculous, it’s because it is.

If you watched the game, you know it was getting heated on both sides. There were two or three shoving matches that had to be broken up and personal fouls being committed by each team. The refs even pulled aside one player from each team during the first half in order to tell them to cool it. It went on the whole entire game. I didn’t feel that needed to be listed out when I said it was “chippy on both sides” because anyone who was watching couldn’t have missed it.
I’m already on record as saying, “you can’t retaliate and a suspension was warranted. Eye gouging has no place in football, and he deserves to see the bench.” I’m not being a homer. I’m frustrated when things get dragged out longer than they need to be and this story more than qualifies.

You're kidding, right?
Tebow got shoved after the play was over. A Florida player other than Tebow tried to gouge out the yes of a Georgia player other than Nick Williams.
Yeah, it was “chippy.” It’s called football. We don’t like each other. But an ordinary hit that was illegal only because of its timing isn’t remotely comparable to a vicious assault that isn’t legal at any time or in any place, on the football field or off, and the latter certainly isn’t legitimate retribution for the former.
Weak, Year2. You’re better than this.
Go 'Dawgs!
I’m not trying to equate the two. I’m trying to put an end to the beating of a long dead horse.

Yet you are defending the actions
of a player who blatently blindsides a QB on a late hit 15 yards away from the play?
You’re better than that.
He's hardly defending him.
It was a cheapshot, it was bushleague, it’s a shame the refs missed it, but it was a football play. What’s more is, you know that there’s a big difference between a late hit and an intentional attempt to eye gouge. Otherwise, you’d be screaming for a Nick Williams suspension.
Was it also a "football play"
When Brandon James was grabbed by the facemask, spun around like a rag doll by the facemask and thrown out of bounds? I think it is poor sportsmanship to try to distinguish which dirty play is worse than another. Rationalization.
He wasn't defending him
He was saying it doesn’t justify an attempt to gouge another man’s eyes out. And I agree.

Well done, Year2.
Like Spencer Hall, you have a rational, objective take on this and are doing a good job of staying above all the bullshit.
V is for vindication
The supposed “victim” in all this, Ealey, saying Spikes shouldn’t even be suspended for this.
