It’s really sad that the Blackout is synonymous with Bama and not AU. We really should have put them away after that game

Hats off to South Carolina – your guys played brilliantly until the wheels started to come loose after the somewhat freakish Trattou pick. If the Cocks can play that way consistently, they’re going to be a real pain in the hind-quarters next year for everyone they meet.

Stat of the game – a combined 0/13 on third downs in the second half until that last, fairly meaningless, one for UF.

I'm excited about next year

But every time they give me a reason to think there could still be something special this year, the old South Carolina emerges.

At least we still have the opportunity to defeat Clemson

Is it a cliche to say that consistency is a product of experience? Because it is – your guys have real serious talent right now, and Spurrier seems to have re-discovered his mojo, but too many of your key players just haven’t been there before enough times.

Garcia really impressed me – much more mobile in the first half than I had anticipated, and his fourth down conversion was masterful. He started to come apart after the Trattou pick, but Florida’s defence specialises in that – once you make your first mistake, they never let up. (The difference between this year and last is that the O hasn’t held up its end of the bargain so well – it isn’t putting away opportunities when given by the D, and it isn’t knocking in the early scores that make teams a little edgy and give the D a chance to tee off.)

I was also impressed – dismayed as well, of course – with how often your guys were getting penetration into the backfield and blowing up running plays. The sack numbers won’t reflect the kind of pressure SoCar generated.

From conference standing perspectives it was irrelevant – GaTech clinched earlier – but it could kneecap Miami’s BCS at-large hopes. They were pretty weak, anyhow, but this is probably it for them.

I'm not sure

Before last year, it was always Mike Bobo’s fault and now it’s always Willie Martinez’s fault. Richt is a good coach, but he seems to have lost his fastball over the last few years. He needs to reinvent himself and fast.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Nov 14, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

The failure to correct staff problems is the big similarity to Tubbs for me – also reminiscent of the situation at FSU, where the boosters had to buy out Jeffy to get rid of him. (I’m kinda surprised Mickey Andrews left of his own accord… though I wouldn’t be shocked at all if we discovered eventually that it wasn’t so voluntary a retirement as portrayed.)

It's an important experience.

As someone who has heard family members tell first hand accounts of trying to escape the Holocaust, I agree with you. Too many people have lost or never had an appreciation of just how awful it really was.

by Giant Catfish on Nov 14, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

It’s … an experience. There’s certainly something to be said for witnessing the scene of a really horrific event afterward – nothing like being there to really bring the reality of history home. (I’m a once and future history guy, you understand.)

The same is true of the scenes of non-horrific events, too – I’ve always found that walking the ground of a battle, or getting a first-hand look at an important harbour or what have you, really deepens my understanding.

by peachy rex on Nov 14, 2009 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t mean to imply that battles are non-horrific – just a different scale of event. Some of the WWI fields, like Verdun, are truly ghastly.

Agreed

I’m a history minor and always loved the stuff, so it’s big whenever I get to see one of the places I’ve read about. I love Charleston as a place where you can see some less heavy history. I hate to say it

But could the Big East get two teams into the BCS this year?

SEC = Alabama, Florida
Big Ten = Ohio State, Iowa
Big XII = Texas
ACC = Clemson or Georgia Tech, problably not both
Pac-10 = Stanford and/or Oregon
Mid-major = TCU
Big East = Cincinnati

So does Pitt get a berth ahead of the Clemson/Georgia Tech loser or the runner-up in the Pac-10?

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Nov 14, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe – I think there’s a chance that if BSU and TCU finish undefeated, that both will get invites… the media and political pressure will be immense. With the SEC pretty much guaranteed an at-large if Bama takes care of MSU (realistically, the SECCG would be 11-2 at worst, both Bama and Florida having total weenies up next), that would leave one spot for the Big Ten, ACC, Pac-10 and Big East to fight over.

I don’t see Pitt as an at-large candidate, however – they get in automatically or not at all. A one-loss runner-up Cincy, now… they’d be in the hunt.

I think it's a one year thing.

Barkley is the real deal. They still pull incredible talent, and that will eventually shine through. FWIW, they don’t dominate recruiting like they once did, and people have been slow to catch on to that. They’re still recruiting monsters, but there was a time a couple years ago when they would literally point at a player and they had him instantly. For evidence, Ronald Powell, who is 50/50 right now between UF and USC. In years past, we would never have a chance at a 5 star Cali kid, now we do.

The Pac 10 is also improving as a whole.

So… the great TCU-Utah showdown is a total bust. Thanks a lot, MWC.

by peachy rex on Nov 14, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Definitely a one-horse race, unlike last season. Mixed blessing for the MWC, which needs quality depth in order to make its case as a conference worthy of an auto bid and serious title consideration.

It helps with the arithmetic, but not in terms of public opinion – the selling point of the MWC versus the WAC is that it isn’t dominated by one team, but brings several legit top-tier programs to the table.

Auburn 17, Georgia 17 -- 2:08 3Q

Bounces against the upright and goes good

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

Well, that’s it for Miss St.

by peachy rex on Nov 14, 2009 9:39 PM EST reply actions

It would certainly seem so

Late heroics look quite unlikely

Where was the defensive back on that play? I mean, seriously, how can you leave Jones that open? Staggering.

Man, patience must be running short with the Hat down in bayou country.

Tonight's question:

Does TCU have an argument for the top 2?

Honestly, looking at their resume, they may have an argument for #1.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 14, 2009 9:44 PM EST reply actions

The MWC has some godawful teams – TCU’s computer rating is very strong at the moment, but they finish with 4-5 Wyoming and 0-10 New Mexico, which is going to blow their SOS to hell. Texas also faces some SOS difficulties down the stretch – even the Big 12 title game might not help them much. On the other hand, UF and Bama get each other, which offsets their upcoming weenies; Cincy has Pitt to offset Illinois. So if those teams all keep winning, I doubt TCU will make up any ground in the computers, which is where they would have to do it.

I think it's looking more and more like they do

They’ll be there after the SEC Championship Game. The question is whether they’ll be No. 2 or No. 3

Look at the schedules – if TCU doesn’t jump an undefeated Bama/UF/Texas this week, which is very unlikely – they won’t the rest of the way, not with two absolute weenies left to play for them. And they won’t jump an undefeated Cincy in the computers, not when the Bearcats would have a juicy win over a Pitt team currently very well-liked by the algorithms.

Practically, you're right

I’m talking about on principle, which I know is a dangerous proposition when discussing the BCS. TCU has done what Boise should have done to all of its opponents and the Frogs have annihilated two BCS-caliber MWC foes and defeated two actual BCS teams, including a good Clemson team.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Nov 14, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Of course it won’t happen without an upset. But I’d like to see them get their shot. I’d love to see them jump Texas and listen to the ’Horns whine for the second straight year.

by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 14, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

With an upset they’d have a great shot – Nebraska springing the surprise in the Big 12 title game (they have a great D), or Bama losing to Auburn/Florida to FSU and then winning the SEC.

by peachy rex on Nov 14, 2009 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, I don’t disagree on principle – after one particularly slack week from the big 3 I had Cincy and TCU as the top two teams on my MP ballot.

Points coming fast and furious

Auburn 24, Georgia 24 — 12:30 4Q
Alabama 31, Mississippi State 3 — 6:15 4Q

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

Miss St just falling apart here… from 17-0 with first-and-goal, to 31-3. Ouch.

by peachy rex on Nov 14, 2009 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, they had a TD in the third but bollixed the two point attempt.

by peachy rex on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct

For some reason I thought it was Zona that had done that

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

Georgia 31, Auburn 24
