Texas fans cheer. Stay classy, Redneck State (that is the nickname, isn’t it?)

how can you discern

the cheers for the monster sack vs. the fact that he’s prob out for the game?

granted texas fans are probably a bit more relieved that bradford is out, but i wouldn’t label them that harshly that quickly

Plus, Texas fans are scum. That is only personal experiences, though. I seem to be alone in that opinion.

I have a friend at UT pharmacy school

and I try to visit her once a semester or so. It’s a fun town, but I wore a UF hat once, and caught more “f@ggot!”, “How’s Tebow’s *ock taste?” etc than I ever have at TWLOCP, Tallahassee, or any SEC rival. Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but they were bad.

The only fans who are even remotely entitled to criticize our fan support

…are South Carolina fans, since they’ve pretty much packed their stadium for lousy football for years. Even then, it’s the difference between a pretty large state university (and the huge number of alumni, sidewalk alumni, etc. that result) and a school with like 5k undergrads.

Other than that, I don’t give a shit what some fan of a football factory thinks of our fan support.

He's had a pretty rough year

I picked OU in my pickems, but I wouldn’t have if I knew Bradford was going to get hurt again. Now…I think I’d still pick OU. Texas is a strange team.

Linebacker kitty (who’s going to be nose tackle kitty the way she’s growing) wishes to point out that Ohio State trails Purdue 9-7 at the half. The Buckeyes have been out-gained two to one, out-possessed by even more, and have coughed up the ball thrice.

I'll admit,

as the announcers explained it, it might actually be correct. However, I have a hard time believing that a player should be called for leaping when he jumps straight up and then a lineman happens to fall under his feet while he’s in the air. That doesn’t seem correct to me.

So can the media lay off the snide remarks about the lack of thrills (ie, points!) in the big games involving the SEC heavy-weights? Because 9 points and three hundred yards in the first half combined for OU and Texas is a long damn way from lighting up the scoreboard, you know?

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

That was one of the worst quarterbacking decisions I’ve ever seen – all day in the pocket, acres of room to run, and Pryor heaves a rainbow downfield to a guy tightly covered for the inevitable pick.

And then Purdue hands it right back on an equally atrocious pass. The Big-10 Network : where ugly happens.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

And Pryor is picked again, throwing to the sidelines – nice play by the corner to dive in front of the receiver. That’s three drives in a row ending in interceptions (this is a game, mind you, which featured four consecutive drives ending in fumbles in the first quarter; a quarter capped off by a missed figgie, just for an added icing of impotence.)

I’d better check the listings again and make sure this actually the B-10 Network and not Comedy Central.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

And, after a splendid display of arm-tackling, Purdue scores another TD – now 23-7.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

Larry Smith actually looks competent for a drive

Nice throw on 3rd and long, then does a nice job on the TD. 17-10 Georgia. I’m going to go shower and stop watching so that I can pretend this is the real Vanderbilt offense instead of ruining my positive impressions.

by PhilipVU94 on Oct 17, 2009 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

Nice run by Pryor (after getting pretty fortunate that another long pass wasn’t picked – great play by the safety to get across), but he’s tripped up inside the 5; after a display of red-zone offence worthy of Florida or Bama, OSU takes the figgie. 23-10.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

Pryor sacked – 4th & a fair bit for Ohio State, down 8.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

Desperate heave incomplete as Pryor’s flushed – over on downs. Purdue is only 2:16 from a huge upset.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Huge error by Ohio State – they had their stop and would get the ball back with more than a minute-and-half left (though with no timeouts), but a defender reached out blindly on third down and caught himself a hand full of face-mask. Purdue kneeling right now, and this one is OVER!

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Arky’s offensive line was absolutely over-run on that first series… and Petrino was dead lucky on that fumble. I guess Arky’s not going for the ‘play conservative and wait for the Gators to screw up’ strategy, huh?

Ugh. Too bad the personal foul was after the kick.

Not that it matters. Addazio has cost us 10 points, Cooper has cost us 7.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Ball security is a major issue for Florida this year – last season, except against Ole Miss, the Gators were very good about holding onto the ball. But the fumbles are just happening all over the place in 2009.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

Is every other tailback option injured? I can’t see why James is getting the carries otherwise.

Arkansas 10, Florida 3 -- Halftime

Thoughts:

I’m not sure if Florida is losing this game or Arkansas is winning. The Razorbacks have played good defense at times and good offense at times, but Florida has certainly helped with turnovers and at times bad offense.

Florida seems a little bit surprised to even be in a game. Something is off or out of sync, I don’t quite know how to describe it.

After a rough start, Mallett seems to be getting gradually more comfortable. Florida best hope that doesn’t continue, or they could be in for a long game.

The offence doesn’t have an identity right now, and Arky’s just good enough defensively to take advantage. And there’s definitely an edge missing, though I’m not sure how exactly to define it.

The defence has been pretty good, though losing Spikes definitely hurts, and there have been some rough moments, so to speak.

Hey – how come we can’t ever be the ones to bust a big play? (Besides Cooper not catching the ball.)

Why not? He was a mile outside the tackle box. WTF?

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

He’s confident in his scrambling ability, I guess, but especially when there’s no-one in the backfield he does need to learn to get rid of the ball if there’s nothing positive to be done with it.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

He used to pull the ball down and run

Right on

Actually (joking aside) I don’t think it’s part of some conspiracy to help Florida win. I just think refs see what they expect to see, and when an upset is brewing they really expect to see the underdog melt down.

Especially galling now that Tejada missed again.

So what do you do if you're Florida?

Go for the home run to finish the game, or give six or seven more yards to try a FG?

Very. A potentially game-winning score that doesn’t bring a celebration penalty is pretty rare these days.

I can’t believe it. Fantastic game by Arky – they did everything they could have (except for the missed figgies.) Definitely a team to watch down the road.

Yes, Alabama fans. You’re safe at No. 1 for at least another week as long as you win tonight.

Yeah, I’ll accept Bama as #1 pretty much regardless of how a win comes – I might even accept Texas as #2 if they hadn’t put it on the ground like fumbles were going out of style themselves.

A less than perfect start

for USC. I was counting on this being a good game. Virtually nothing else good on the slate.

GaTech v VaTech could be exciting – if the Hokies go down that would scramble the picture outside the top 3 considerably. I have it on ESPN2 here.

McElroy needs to have some sort of a groove

He looked like crap vs. OM. He doesn’t want to turn this into a streak. Two bad INTs already in this game.

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

He’s come back to earth a bit after the hot start. This hasn’t been a season for great QB play pretty much anywhere; even the guys who are playing well have had off-days.

This is why you watch GaTech – they’ve thrown six passes through not-quite three quarters, and Nesbitt has only one completion. But that one completion went for 51 yards. Hehe.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

USC needs to score

If Bama gets a sizable lead, they can run down your throat so much you’ll look up and an entire quarter disappeared.

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Alabama has thrown three interceptions and been flagged for PI twice

And they still lead by 10, though those PI calls could change that — knock on wood.

This really hasn’t been a good day for ranked teams and turnovers. I don’t know that it makes me feel any better about Florida, but at least we aren’t alone in our ineptitude.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

I've never seen so many jump balls and possible INTs

in one quarter as this one. It’s like backyard football.

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

Huge run from GaTech for a TD – Vatech needs two of their own with three minutes to go. How Nesbitt stayed inbounds I don’t know – fantastic work tip-toeing down the sideline after a hit.

Just to answer some concerns

I will have more on Arkansas-Florida in the weekly wrapup. I wanted to get the officiating thing out of the way on the day-of recap so I could deal with the football later.

I was a bit harsh on you in the comments – sorry. But I do get tired of people jumping right to officiating as an explanation.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Understandable

I was frustrated because I generally think the officials do a good job. (There’s only one game for even my team that I’ve ever claimed was caused by a bad call.) But in the space of two weeks, they’ve ruined two good games.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Oct 17, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks.

I was honestly concerned the blogosphere was going to so apeshit over the terrible calls that the game itself, which was damn good, was going to get overlooked. Arkansas’ D, their RB, Tebow’s play in the 4th, UF’s D standing up when the O put them in SO many holes, and Sturgis deserve a lot of words, IMO.

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Bama has a sliver-wide weakness

in the deep secondary. They play so tight in coverage you can bust one after not even getting a completion for 10 plays.

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

A spot of scoreboard watching – Miami up 10-0 on UCF short of halftime. San Diego St just scored to pull within a TD of BYU in the fourth. Colorado is up two TDs on Kansas at the half.

And VaTech scores a TD, and now trails by five with 1:48 to go. Onside a-coming.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

The bumblebees recover the onside. VaTech has no timeouts, so it’s kneel-down time.

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Good news!

Although part of me wants UF to get bumped down. They clearly need a huge dose of motivation.

by Giant Catfish on Oct 17, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think Meyer and Strong el are exercising their vocal chords tonight. Personally I’d have no problem with Florida being #3, but this has been one ugly week of football in the top ten. Florida was dreadful, Bama’s uninspired, Texas was unsightly, VaTech lost, Boise St (a couple of days ago) didn’t exactly put on a show, USC won but not too comfortably, Ohio State was upset horribly, Miami’s making heavy weather against a serious underdog… just about the only top-10 team that looked really thoroughly competent was Cincinnati, and their QB is out for an indefinite period, which puts the damper on their hopes. Even getting a Mumme Poll-style undifferentiated top 12 is going to be tough.

And it wasn’t even a fluky, get-a-bunch-of-turnovers & win-by-a-figgie game either – FSU thrashed them. (There were a lot of turnovers, but mostly once BYU was down big and pressing to get in the game.) Given what we’ve seen of both teams, it was just a bizarre result, no question.

My vote is for an unimpressive Bama win.

But UF would have to lose to one of UGA/Vandy/MSU as well to lose the East. And USC would have to win out in the SEC after tonight.

Big drive from Kansas, but not big enough – another ranked team goes down, and the Big-12 North gets a little more muddled. (If anyone cares.)

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

You know, if Okie State holds off Mizzou – and they’re up a TD at the half – K-State would be our current leader in the North. That’s almost as weird as BC leading the ACC-Atlantic… though not quite in the same category of oddness as Virginia leading the Coastal. That’s right, the division containing VaTech, GaTech, Miami and UNC is currently topped by a team that couldn’t beat William & Mary. (Of course, the Cavaliers get GaTech and Miami during the next three weeks, so their pre-eminence really shouldn’t last. Even the ACC isn’t that bizarre, right?)

by peachy rex on Oct 17, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Boston College I could see as a division winner – their variance is enormous, but there’s no really complete team in the Atlantic (everyone else has at least three losses overall already.) But Virginia making a real run in the Coastal would be pretty surprising even by ACC standards… that’s a good division, and the Cavaliers are tops right now by virtue of scheduling and not much else.

Still, you’re right – the ACC does unpredictability like no-one else.

Mizzou-OSU should at least provide some points – 24-17 would be an exciting sixty minutes in the SEC, and they’re only halfway through in Stillwater.
