Florida Gators at Oklahoma Sooners, Jan 8, 2009 8:17 PM EST

Yeah, the name is terrible. But this is our game. I'll be around every few minutes -- the computer and the TV are in different rooms right now,so I'll be going back and forth.

Speak for yourself, man – I’m so nervous I want to curl up into a tiny little ball like a sleeping kitten until the game is over. (Of course, I’m nervous before every single game, from the Citadel up.)

both teams looked pumped…lets see how that OU offense does against this defense..

Some good pressure by the d-line in that first series, and OU doesn’t seem to be completely in synch offensively – the fearsome pace just wasn’t there.

I’m a little concerned that TOP is going to hurt us later on – but UF’s defence has more strength in depth than in spectacular all-world starters (especially up front), so it might be less vulnerable than some teams in that respect.

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

That little short stuff in front of the defenders isn’t going to work very well – the UF defenders (and the OU ones too, probably) are too fast and tackle too well.

The Gator offence seems a little tentative so far – but, despite UF’s reputation for jumping out early, the coaches tend to be pretty conservative in the opening drives, especially with poor field position. (It’s the inner Woody Hayes breaking out of Meyer.)

I think Florida is in a world of trouble. They can’t run it and they can’t really stop the run. They are trying to make Tebow win it with his arm and right now that’s not happening either.

by DoubleB on Jan 8, 2009 9:56 PM EST reply actions

First half thoughts

Florida looks like it’s just hanging on. Part of that is Tebow’s play, but the defense appears to be struggling, too. If not for two questionable decisions (one by Stoops, one by Bradford), the Gators are down 17-7 right now.

No one’s going to believe me know,, but the first score I had in my prediction space for this game was like 34-24. Then I thought, “Nah, it’ll be higher scoring than that,” and changed it. This is why I go with my first instinct on predictions, even when it doesn’t seem “right.”

And Charles Davis’ idea of analysis is obviously to come up with one thought and beat the same dead horse over and over and over. FASTPACEDOKLAHOMAOFFENSEOFFENSEOFOKLAHOMAFASTPACEDFASTPACEDOKLAHOMA!!!!!

by cocknfire on Jan 8, 2009 9:57 PM EST reply actions

by DoubleB on Jan 8, 2009 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

No, they didn’t – but you have to give some credit to UF’s red-zone defence, which has been solid all year.

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

Solid drive...

Tebow carried the team on his back for that one.

by brandonh on Jan 8, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

He really did – but what I liked best was that UF showed three completely different looks on goal-to-go.

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Nice D and special teams at the end of that drive to keep OU off the board.

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 10:51 PM EST reply actions

If one taunting call after everything else is his “true colours”, he’s wasted in football – man would be pulling down twenty million a picture and racking up the Oscars.

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

That was actually a completely fair call – taunting, without a doubt. But after the smack OU talked (their defence anyhow)… I don’t feel bad about it at all. (And yeah, UF players talked quite a bit too… but at least no-one said Bradford would be the 4th best QB in the SEC.)

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

You know, he might just… he certainly didn’t look much better than Snead or Stafford to me (or Tebow, though they obviously have completely different playing styles.) But, hell, get a little bit of a pass-rush going, and most QBs don’t look quite so brilliant as before.

by peachy rex on Jan 8, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

he throws a beautiful ball...

but like you said, he folds under pressure…Tebow and most other SEC QBs do not. They are used to constant pressure and keep their composure.

Eat your words Big 12. Congrats Florida.

by brandonh on Jan 8, 2009 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

He put some good throws right on the money. He’s better than everyone except Tebow.

by DoubleB on Jan 8, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

I think he is better – but not that much better. He definitely benefited from a conference with lots of less-than-stellar defences, an absolute brick-wall of a line, tremendous skill-position talent, and a very high pace to generate lots of attempts.

Snead is the guy in the conference who really concerns me going forward (though Jefferson has tremendous promise too); I’m so glad UF won’t face Ole Miss again in the regular season until he’s gone.

by peachy rex on Jan 9, 2009 12:02 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, and by the way – Oklahoma was an excellent team, fully deserving of their reputation. I would have been very disappointed if UF had lost, of course, but in a day or two I think I would have accepted the result.

That actually may have been the best defence UF faced (though I think Bama still wins that honour), and the offence – despite the relatively modest numbers – terrified me right to the end. But although Bradford was efficient, and their receivers were just as big as advertised, and Brown just as formidable… OU never broke the big plays they had routinely against their other adversaries, and often seemed uncharacteristically cautious and prudent.
