BlogPoll Ballot, Week 12

First of all, the ballot, which might or might not bring some of the same arguments -- some of you are probably tired of debating me -- and then some more proof. (Another chart, even.)

RankTeamDelta
1 Florida 1
2 Texas Tech 1
3 Alabama --
4 Texas --
5 Oklahoma --
6 Southern Cal 1
7 Utah 1
8 Penn State --
9 Oklahoma State 1
10 Ohio State 1
11 Boise State --
12 Missouri 1
13 Georgia 1
14 Oregon State 3
15 Ball State 1
16 Miami (Florida) 3
17 Cincinnati 8
18 Michigan State --
19 West Virginia 7
20 Pittsburgh 1
21 North Carolina 9
22 Georgia Tech 1
23 Connecticut 3
24 Boston College 2
25 Northwestern 1

Dropped Out: Florida State (#15), Virginia Tech (#20), California (#22), Wake Forest (#24).

Little bit more stable ballot this week.

Okay, the Florida/Texas Tech/Alabama part. This week, let's take a look at my Top 5 by teams' win-loss record, points per game, opponents' points per game, points per game differential and strength of schedule rank as determined by Sagarin. (No, I don't like him any better than any of you do. Find me a better, widely-recognized measure and I'll use it.)

Blogpolltop5_medium

Against a far tougher schedule, Florida has a PPGD that's at least five points higher than anyone else in my Top 5, against a schedule that is either tougher or one slot less difficult than anyone else in my Top 5.

Now, no chart will ever tell me exactly how to vote; I'm not ready to jump Texas or Oklahoma over Alabama yet. But I think this is useful to look at as we debate Florida vs. Alabama. Against a clearly more difficult schedule, Florida has been more dominant. And, for those arguing that the Tide are a defensive team, the Gators have better defensive numbers.

Argue "running up the score" if you want, but let me ask you this: Has Alabama given any indication, aside from the Georgia game, that it could run up the score on a good team if it wanted to? (And Clemson is 5-5 in the ACC with two of those wins over FCS teams -- so, no, they don't count as a good team.) You can't choose not to run up the score if you're not capable of doing so in the first place.

So Florida moves to first this week, Texas Tech falls to No. 2, and Alabama remains at No. 3. All of this is academic right now anyway; Florida and Alabama will play in the SEC Championship Game in three weeks and decide all this for good. But Florida, for the time being, looks better.

Mostly teams moving up or down one place here and there, but a look at some of the big moves:

Oregon State (No. 14, up 3)
The Beavers continue their march toward the Pac-10 title and impress in the process. Since defeating Southern Cal, they've lost by a field goal to Utah, then knocked off Washington State, Washington, Arizona State, UCLA and Cal. The last team is why Oregon State leaps to No. 14 this week; the Bears are pretty good, if not ranked.

Miami (No. 16, up 3)
Who knows anything about the ACC anymore? But Miami lost close games to North Carolina and Florida State, whom we think are two of the better teams in the Athletically Challenged Conference, and a lop-sided game to Florida. This week, they edge Virginia Tech.

Cincinnati (No. 17, up 8)
Why not? The Big East and the ACC have made this part of the ballot the kind of thing where I pull a few hairs out, dart my eyes between a few schedules, and just kind of pick who looks good next. Aside from at Oklahoma and at UConn, though, they've taken care of every game. This week, they defeat Louisville 28-20.

West Virginia (No. 19, up 7)
This might be less defensible. I'm open to convincing on this one.

North Carolina (No. 21, down 9)
Lost to Maryland. Nine might not be enough.

Connecticut (No. 23, up 3), Boston College (No. 24, up 2), Northwestern (No. 25, up 1)
This weeks attrition picks.

On the radar:
South Carolina, maybe, based on whether and how they beat Clemson; that won't be for a couple of weeks ... Any of the ACC teams could get ranked, based on what happens in a given week ... Like South Carolina, Iowa will have to get to 8-4 before I look seriously at ranking them ...

As always, suggestions accepted in the comments. The teams I'm shakiest on: Ball State, Cincinnati, Michigan State, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Northwestern. But I'll listen on anyone. You might not change my mind, but -- believe it or not -- I listen to all arguments.

Finally, a reminder: You can keep up with the BCS rankings at SB Nation's Race to the BCS hub.
