Dreams are Good Things to Have

Though this might be a nightmare for the rest of the country. The Quad over at the NYT things the Big Ten could have two teams in the BCS. I couldn't make this up if I had the time.

"That means that, even though the Big 12 currently has three teams ranked in the top five and five teams ranked in the top 13, only two of them can possibly play in the national championship game, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. Therefore some of will be eliminated from competition for selection, opening the door for others –- perhaps from the Big Ten."

Good luck with that.

There will be 2 from the Big Ten

Who else will fill the spots? Seriously? Let’s assume that Penn State and Ohio State win out. 11-1 Penn State goes to the Rose Bowl. You’ve got 10-2 Ohio State. There are 4 at large BCS bids. The SEC gets one with the loser of the SEC Championship. The Big 12 gets one with a second team from the South Division. A non-BCS team gets one (let’s say Utah). That leaves one spot. Who gets it?

Ohio State?
Boise State/Ball State (they would be selected, not required to be chosen)
A second Pac 10 team with 3 losses
A second Big East team with 3 losses
A second ACC team with 3 losses

Of course Ohio State gets chosen.

The only way that the Big Ten does not get two teams in the BCS is if Oregon State runs the table and claims the automatic Pac 10 berth in the Rose Bowl. Then, USC gets chosen over Ohio State and goes to the Fiesta Bowl.

If you look at Oregon State

It’s not entirely inconceivable that they could win out — in which case I do think SC is in.

And let’s say Boise State is undefeated and ranked No. 8 or so. I think the “flash” of THE TEAM THAT BEAT OKLAHOMA A FEW YEARS AGO DON’T YOU REMEMBER IT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!! would be more THE TEAM THAT LOST THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TWO YEARS IN A ROW SO THEY SUCK EVEN THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!! (caps sarcasm, in case you can’t tell)

I think it’s only moderately likely, at best, that the Big Ten gets two teams in. I think it’s more likely they don’t.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

The SoCal-OSU scenario is fairly likely...

But a BCS bowl will not take Boise over Ohio State. Even with the interest in Boise as a team that brought us one of the most exciting games ever combined with the disdain for Ohio State, the Buckeyes still pull huge ratings and bring lots of fans with them wherever they go. They’re one of the most popular teams in the country, and that will play in their favor when the bowls make their selections.

Not that I don’t hate the idea of it. A conference with Minnesota as a contender is not a good conference.

Go Cocks!

Look at the Order of Selection Too

Let’s assume SEC-Big 12 Championship Game and USC/Penn St. Rose Bowl (As I said, if Oregon State wins out, Ohio State is out of the BCS).

Sugar Bowl gets to replace the SEC Champ, and will pick another SEC team. Fiesta Bowl gets to replace the Big 12 Champ and picks another Big 12 team. The ACC champ goes to the Orange Bowl. The order for picking the final three teams will be 1) Fiesta, 2) Sugar, 3) Orange. Left to be selected are Utah, Big East Champ, and Ohio State/Boise State

The Fiesta Bowl is NOT going to pick Boise over Utah, a team that is ranked ahead of the Broncos. If they want a “mid-major” they’ll pick the one with the bigger fan base, from a nearer state, that is ranked higher. If not, they’ll take Ohio State (against Oklahoma, Texas, or Tech – doesn’t matter).

Assuming the Fiesta Bowl takes Utah, the Sugar Bowl is next. Do you think that New Orleans is going to bank on big number of Boisians (Boisniacs?) traveling from Idaho to Louisiana? In this economy? No. They’d LOVE the chance to put Alabama against Ohio State. Same if it’s Florida.

And then the Orange gets stuck with a mediocre Big East team facing a mediocre ACC team. Sorry, Orange Bowl.
