BlogPoll Ballot, Week 7: Who's No. 1?
Your humble correspondent did not need a new No. 1 after the events of Saturday -- Alabama did not play and thus did not get upset -- but, this having become a straight resume ballot, I did need to review the events of the weekend to make sure Alabama should remain.
As a result, I looked at the only five teams who could at all credibly claim to be the best team in the country: The undefeated BCS-league teams. This doesn't mean these teams would automatically be Nos. 1-5, and in fact they weren't. But there's no way a BCS-league team with the blemish of a loss is going to be more deserving than all five BCS-league teams without one. So I borrowed an exercise I've seen a couple of times at SMQ (now Dr. Saturday), though perhaps with less skill.
| Texas | Alabama | Penn State | Texas Tech | Oklahoma State |
| vs. Oklahoma, W 45-35 | at Georgia, W 41-30 | at Wisconsin, W 48-7 | at Missouri, W 28-23 | |
| at Colorado, W 38-14 | at Clemson, W 34-10 | vs. Oregon State, W 45-14 | vs. Nebraska, W 37-31 | |
| vs. Arkansas, W 52-10 | at Arkansas, W 49-14 | at Kansas State, W 58-28 | ||
| vs. Kentucky, W 17-14 | vs. Illinois, W 38-24 | vs. Troy, W 55-24 | ||
| at Purdue, W 20-6 | vs. Houston, W 56-37 | |||
| vs. Rice, W 52-10 | at Syracuse, W 55-13 | at Nevada, W 35-19 | vs. Texas A&M, W 56-28 | |
| vs. Fla Atlantic, W 52-10 | at Washington St., W 39-13 | |||
| at UTEP, W 42-13 | vs. Temple, W 45-3 | |||
| vs. Tulane, W 20-6 | ||||
| vs. SMU, W 43-7 |
To me, it's pretty clear that Alabama has to remain No. 1. And, to me, Texas doesn't even come in at No. 2, but at No. 3. Granted, if Texas runs the gauntlet it faces over the next month or so, the Longhorns will almost certainly end up No. 1 in the end. Again, this is a snapshot based on what you've done so far. Texas' win over Oklahoma is impressive, but not impressive enough to overcome a weak slate so far.
Without further ado, the ballot:

Dropped Out: Georgia Tech (#24).
Big movers:
No. 4 Florida, up 8
It's hard to remember the last time we saw LSU dominated like the Gators dominated them Saturday. Except for a few moments in the third quarter, the Bayou Bengals seemed unable to keep up with Florida. Problems with the spread? Taken care of. Questions after loss to Ole Miss? Answered.
No. 6 Oklahoma State, up 11
The resume isn't quite good enough to get them into the Top 10, but the Cowboys looked impressive in defeat Missouri. There's no reason this team should not be part of the national championship conversation as long as they continue to win.
No. 16 Vanderbilt, down 10
It was tempting to drop the Commodores all the way out of the poll, but we've seen respectable teams get CROOMed only to rebound and show us that, yes, they were actually good. And the 'Dores have a pretty good resume even with the loss to the Western Division Bulldogs.
No. 23 LSU, down 16
The biggest mover of the week, dropping from the Top 10 to almost off the ballot. At this point, their wins are: Auburn, Mississippi State, Appalachian State and North Texas. They allowed one fewer point to Auburn than did Arkansas, and the Hogs had an intentional safety. They're actually lucky to still be ranked. I expect them to be back, but they still haven't done anything impressive.
No. 25 BYU, down 11
Same problem: Haven't played anyone. The more I look at their schedule, the less impressed I am with the Cougars. Maybe if they run the table, I'll look at moving them up in recognition of the undefeated record. But I doubt at this point that they'll beat Utah.
Viewing Disclosure:
South Carolina vs. Kentucky, most of Tennessee vs. Georgia, most of LSU vs. Florida, most of Clemson vs. Wake Forest, a fair amount of Missouri vs. Oklahoma State and UCLA vs. Oregon
As always, I'd appreciate it if you let me know where I'm wrong.
